Virgin Wolf (2005)

“Until about 100 years ago, almost all women wore headscarves or caps on paintings.  I have been working on this theme since 1993. In the first works (1993-1995) to question the ‘image of women in art’.

After 2004, after the attack on Theo van Gogh, the headscarf discussion became a much-discussed topic.

I started to play with the different forms of the headscarf in combination with well-known images such as the women in the paintings of Vermeer, van Gogh, Rembrandt, Pieter de Hoogh and also Little Red Riding Hood, Barbie, Droste vrouw, wife of Boterbabbelaar, Zeeuws meisje etc….

Maria Sluierhof

At the beginning of 2011, the figure of Maria Sluierhof was created. Her history as a daughter in the 5th generation of Dutch emigrants around 1845 is related to my own history and is a model for the situation of migrants in the Netherlands at the moment.

On the run from economic but especially religious reasons, they founded villages like Pella, Holland and Zeeland mainly in Michigan and Iowa, and this background can still be seen in those places today.
